Objectives

The GCR/SPE simulator is a unique European infrastructure that will be able to simulate the full GCR spectrum in terms of LET and, partially, in charge composition. In addition, we will be able to simulate intense SPE events of different spectra. While the construction of the device has been funded by ESA, the testing with shielding material and the TRL enhancement will be performed in the HEARTS project. The device can also be used for the simulation of SPE, which is less complex than the GCR simulator, but still very relevant for a broad variety of space applications.

Tasks

  • Task 6.1: Standardized setup for the GCR/SPE simulation experiments (GSI, TAS, month 1-24)
  • Task 6.2: Quantitative measurement of shielding effectiveness (GSI, TAS, month 12-36)
  • Task 6.3: Radiobiological characterization (GSI, month 24-48)

Deliverables

  • D6.1: GCR/SPE simulator setup
  • D6.2: Dosimetry of the GCR/SPE simulator with shielding
  • D6.3: Radiobiology of the GCR/SPE simulator with shielding

Milestones

  • M18: First experimental demonstration of dose increase behind thick shields in Europe
  • M19: Achievement of TRL6-7 for the SIS18 GCR/SPE simulator
